Pineapple actinidia: characteristic features of the variety

Last year, tempted by the name, we planted several pineapple actinidia seedlings and now we are looking forward to the first harvest. The fruits were seen only in the photo that the seller showed us when buying, but I would like to know more about this species. Please give a detailed description of the pineapple actinidia variety. How does it bear fruit and what are the taste characteristics?

pineapple actinidia Today, actinidia bushes are no longer a wonder and this garden liana is increasingly grown on plots. Among them, the actinidia arguta and kolomikta are especially popular: if the first plant will delight gardeners with a plentiful and tasty harvest, then the second will become a real find for flower growers and decorate the yard with its decorative variegated foliage. One of the most popular varieties is pineapple actinidia, the description of the variety of which should start with the fact that this culture is presented in two varieties of actinidia at once: both among the kolomikta and among the arguta. Let's dwell on each type in more detail.

Both species are dioecious plants with both male and female varieties. For stable fruiting, simultaneous planting of plants of both sexes is necessary.

For creepers argument it is characterized by a powerful structure - the height of the bush can exceed 10 m. The leaves are painted green, not particularly decorative, but the flowering is very beautiful, and the white inflorescences are large enough. The species is distinguished by abundant fruiting from the age of 3 years and the sweet pineapple taste of fruits, colored green. The harvest ripens closer to October.

The advantages of the variety are:

  • high productivity;
  • good transportability of fruits;
  • rather strong ovary, which hardly crumbles;
  • excellent winter hardiness (withstands 30 degrees of frost).

Actinidia kolomikta pineapplepineapple michurina

One of the "old" varieties, also known as actinidia pineapple Michurin in honor of the scientist who created it. The bush is quite large, averaging about 7 m in height, with reddish-brown shoots. Leaves are ovoid with sharp tips.

Actinidia kolomikta has the ability to change the color of leaves throughout the summer (from green to white and even crimson), which is why it is also valued as an ornamental plant.

Flowering begins in June, and in August, 7 years after planting, you can harvest. The oblong fruits are not very large (the weight of one is a little more than 2 g, and the length is no more than 3 cm), but very tasty and sweet, with a strong smell and taste of pineapple, colored green with a slight red blush on the sides.

The advantages of the variety include:

  • fast growth rate;
  • high decorative foliage;
  • good winter hardiness.

The disadvantage of the variety is the uneven ripening of the fruits, partial shedding and a short shelf life after harvesting.
