Beautiful spreading bushes of St. John's wort can often be found in the field, on forest lawns and just along the roads. If for some it is just a weed, then adherents of traditional medicine never pass by and do not destroy the plant. The healing properties of St. John's wort are recognized even in official medicine. There are ready-made tinctures in pharmacies that doctors recommend to take for certain diseases. What is so special about this culture and how is it valuable from the point of view of medicine?
St. John's wort is a herbaceous plant in the form of a branchy bush, the height of which does not exceed 70 cm. It blooms all summer with small yellow flowers. For the preparation of medicinal decoctions, the plant is harvested at the beginning of flowering, cutting off the shoots along with the inflorescences. Procurement of medicinal raw materials is carried out by drying.
The healing properties of St. John's wort

- The action of the herb reduces the effectiveness of contraceptives, which can result in unwanted pregnancy.
- Long-term use of tinctures and decoctions of the plant is fraught with an allergic reaction, in particular, urticaria. Bitter taste also appears in the mouth, appetite worsens and constipation begins to torment. Moreover, prolonged treatment with St. John's wort can cause temporary impotence in men.
- Do not take pot at the same time as pain relievers, antibiotics, and antidepressants.
An overdose of St. John's wort tincture causes severe headache and nausea.
When is St. John's wort contraindicated?
Useful tinctures should be discarded:
- pregnant women, so as not to cause a miscarriage;
- hypertensive patients, since St. John's wort will increase blood pressure even more;
- in the presence of nephritis and cirrhosis of the liver;
- after organ transplant operations - St. John's wort can cause their rejection.
