This year I bought a couple of varieties for the first time, I have long dreamed of them. All the tubers took root, half even bloomed. Maybe I did something wrong, that not everyone bloomed? And what to do with them now, dig them up for the winter, or can they be left in the flowerbed?

Cannes belong to the horse family, in which they are its only representative. They are perennial flowers with erect tall stems and large leaves. The length of the leaf plate in some species reaches more than 80 cm with a width of 25 cm. The flowers of cannes are also large, about 8 cm, collected in a racemose or paniculate inflorescence.

Cannes are unpretentious, it is easy to grow them, especially since the bushes even rarely get sick. They grow quickly and bloom until the frost. However, the culture does not tolerate low temperatures. On the territory of our homeland, cannes are grown mainly with mandatory wintering indoors.

How to care for cannes in the garden

Cannes propagate by seeds or tubers. At home, the second method is most often used. It is both faster and simpler, and allows you to preserve varietal characteristics, unlike cannes obtained from seeds.

Tubers are planted in open ground at the end of April, when it gets warm. They need a plot that is cozy, well-lit and fertile. Leave up to 50 cm between the bushes.

Towards the end of June, Cannes will delight you with the first buds. And in order for the flowering to be lush and the plant to develop well, he needs a little help:

• water regularly, more often during the budding period;
• feed at least 3 times per season, using organic matter in the form manure infusion and mineral complexes;
• remove weeds in a timely manner, especially among young plants, so that they do not drown them;
• cut off faded inflorescences.

Features of wintering cannes

Flowers can hibernate in the open ground only in the “southern” south, where in winter frosts are not higher than minus 5 ° С. And even then they need to be well hilled and covered with spruce branches, cutting off the aerial part before that.

In most cases, cannes are dug up for the winter. You can store them in several ways:

1. The tubers dried after digging are brought into the basement and stored like dahlias. At the same time, they dig them up together with a clod of earth.
2. The bushes are dug up and planted in pots. They are placed in a cool place and watered periodically so that the tubers do not dry out.
3. Compact varieties of cannes can be completely dug out before frost, transplanted into flowerpots and brought into the house. As indoor plants, they continue to bloom until mid-spring. After which it is advisable to give them a rest.
