How to propagate linden by cuttings - an easy and quick way to get a lot of seedlings
Cutting linden is one of the most popular ways to propagate it, especially if it is problematic to get seedlings. There is absolutely nothing complicated in how to propagate linden by cuttings. This culture takes root very quickly and well, and as a result, in a couple of years you will have a small tree. And for reproduction to really go well, you just need to properly prepare the cuttings and prepare a place for rooting for them.
When and how to harvest cuttings
- the optimal length of the shank is not less than 7 and not more than 15 cm;
- the presence of 4-5 living kidneys (nodes);
- the upper cut is straight, above the kidney, the lower one is at an angle, below the kidney.
To accelerate root formation, cuttings need processing before planting growth stimulant.
Preparing the soil for planting cuttings
In order for the cuttings to more actively build up their own root system, the area where they will be planted should be prepared in the fall. To do this, it is cleared of weeds and dug up with the introduction of organic matter (humus, ash). Then they are passed with a rake, breaking lumps and leveling the surface, and covered with a film. If weed roots remain in the soil, they will rot under the film over the winter and become an additional fertilizer.
How to propagate linden by cuttings
After treatment with a growth stimulant, the cuttings are planted in the ground on a site that has been prepared since autumn. It is not necessary to deepen them much - a couple of centimeters are enough. A distance of about 10 cm is left between the cuttings. In the hot summer, the plantings are shaded.
The rooting of linden cuttings in the greenhouse is easier and faster. Comfortable conditions contribute to the active awakening of the buds and the formation of the root system.
Another option is to prepare cuttings in the fall. In this case, until spring, they are stored in the basement, having previously landed in a box with wet sand. With the arrival of spring heat, cuttings, which by this time may even take root in the sand, are planted in the garden.
