The benefits of planting grapes in autumn are clear. There is no need to take risks and store the seedlings, and by this time they themselves are as strong as possible, with good roots. Knowing how to plant grapes with seedlings in autumn, you can speed up their growing season next season. Plants planted before winter have time to strengthen their root system, so they wake up earlier in spring. They are more resistant to adverse conditions and diseases compared to just planted spring seedlings.

When is it better to plant seedlings

The timing of planting is very important: if you plant it too early, the bushes will begin to grow actively, but this is not necessary. Young twigs will not survive the winter. Late planting will not leave the plants time for survival and rooting, and they can also freeze out.

The optimal time for autumn planting of grapes is October. However, you need to have time to do this at least 2 weeks before the onset of frost. This time is enough for the seedlings to take root, but they will not have time to start growing.

Preparation of seedlings

The planting material must be absolutely healthy, without signs of diseases, with developed roots. It is desirable that the stem already have several shoots.

The planting hole is dug well and deep, at least 50 cm. A drainage layer (pebbles, expanded clay) is poured at the bottom.

Next, the pit is filled with nutritious soil mixture in layers:

• humus;
• fertile soil dug out of the hole, mixed with mineral fertilizers (ash, potassium salt, superphosphate);
• a layer of ordinary soil, without fertilizers, to avoid contact of the roots with minerals.

The seedlings are set obliquely (to the south) in the holes so that the upper bud is 15 cm below the soil level. The roots are spread, covered with soil and watered. As soon as the frosts come, the planted grapes must be covered.
