We breed handsome daffodils - when to plant bulbs in the fall and why now
Every gardener should know that daffodils bloom early and amicably in spring, when to plant bulbs in autumn. If you have noticed more than once that the flowers planted in spring in the current season only "drive" foliage, then there are most often two reasons. Firstly, it is a deep landing, and, secondly, its timing. How to plant bulbs is a separate topic and we will discuss it a little later. Today we will focus on the timing of planting. And first of all - about the autumn planting of bulbs as the most optimal option for growing this crop.
Benefits of autumn planting and transplanting daffodils
Another important advantage of the autumn planting concerns the flowering of plants. Having grown dense roots and hardened in the garden in winter, such bushes will definitely bloom in spring. But if at this time of year you just plant the bulbs, they are still weak and there are few nutrients for the formation of peduncles.
Daffodils - when to plant bulbs in autumn
Planting dates depend on the climate of the growing region, but there is one rule. The bulbs should have at least 2-3 weeks in reserve before frost so that they have time to grow roots. Planting is carried out in soil, the temperature of which is about 10 ° C heat.
Similar conditions occur:
- in the southern regions - in mid-September (sometimes at the end of the month);
- on the territory of the Moscow region and in the middle lane - from mid-August to mid-September;
- in Siberia and the Urals - from early to mid-August.
As for the shelter, in most cases the bulbs hibernate well without it. But in regions with difficult weather conditions, daffodils are recommended well mulch... And if the planting dates were missed and frosts hit early, then the top should still be covered with lutrasil or at least spruce branches. This also applies to varieties with low winter hardiness.
