How about neighbors or Planting onions for the winter in Belarus
The technology of growing onions, including the method of winter planting, has common requirements in almost all former Soviet countries. The exception is mainly the landing time, because the climate is sometimes extremely different. Planting onions for the winter in Belarus is generally carried out according to the same principles as growing in the Russian open spaces. However, there are still some nuances. First of all, and most importantly, it is worthwhile to correctly determine the time when the onions can be planted in the soil. And also choose the most profitable variety in terms of yield in the local climate.
Planting onions for the winter in Belarus - we determine the timing, taking into account the climate
Belarusian gardeners plant onions in late October - early November. But at the same time, they are also guided by their weather conditions. The basic rule is to have time to plant at least 10 days before frost. This time is enough for the bulbs to take root, but do not sprout.
Which onion is better to plant before winter
Another recommendation that can be applied to Belarusian farmers or summer residents is to plant better zoned varieties. Of course, there are many hybrids now, but it is better to use local breeding. It is created taking into account the conditions of the local climate. Such onions usually have increased resistance to low temperatures, but at the same time they have a high yield.
Before winter, onions are most often planted, among which Belarusians praise and love the following varieties:
- Dyyment;
- Kryvitsky Ruzhovy;
- Skarb Litsvinaў;
- Wind.
Features of autumn planting onions
Seeds are also planted in Belarus, and sevok... Each type of planting material has its own nuances of planting:
- They take the smallest sevok, no more than 12 mm, then it will not go into the arrow, but will give a good turnip.
- Seeds are sown not in two weeks, but just before the very frosts. If you do this earlier, the crops will sprout and suffer, up to death.
When planting in autumn, the onions are not soaked, and the root collar is not cut off. At the same time, the bed is made deeper than in spring to protect crops from frost.
If the winter is going to be harsh, which is generally not uncommon for Belarus, the onion beds in winter are additionally insulated by mulching with rotted manure. It will serve as a fertilizer and will retain heat with moisture. If there is no manure, sawdust can be used for this purpose, but in the spring they will need to be removed from the beds.
That's all the intricacies of the Belarusian onion cultivation by the autumn planting method. As you can see, they are not much different from ours.
