Also sphagnum contains sphagnol. It is a phenol-like substance that has antiseptic properties. Due to the huge amount of this component, the plants that have sunk to the bottom of the reservoir do not decompose, thus forming peat.
Sphagnum: medicinal properties
White marsh moss is very popular in both traditional and folk medicine. In addition to bactericidal properties, sphagnum is also famous for its antifungal action.
With bedsores
Fresh or dried moss was used as bedding by our ancestors. Sphagnum is good for air permeability, and also removes an unpleasant odor. All this is due to the bactericidal effect.
With osteochondrosis, radiculitis, rheumatism
For the preparation of a healing agent, dry moss is used. In a deep container, it is necessary to place 1 part of the raw material and pour 10 parts of boiling water. Cover with a lid and keep at room temperature until it cools completely. Then strain and pour into a warm bath. Lie in this broth for no more than 40 minutes. After taking a bath, all problem areas will need to be rubbed with a warming ointment.

The use of sphagnum in construction
If now there are no problems with insulation, then several decades ago everything was the other way around.Despite this, our ancestors found a method to make their home comfortable. When constructing a wooden building, dry sphagnum sprigs were placed between the logs. Thanks to their unique capabilities, a healthy climate and correct humidity indicators have always been maintained in the room. Also, the moss did not let cold air into the house.
In our time, this method of insulation is gaining more and more popularity. And this is not surprising, because people who care about their health will never buy synthetic insulation, but prefer environmentally friendly raw materials.
Residents of the northern regions put sphagnum in their children’s beds so that they could sleep comfortably and warmly. They were also used to insulate houses, in the construction of hives.
Moss in floriculture
Many summer residents know sphagnum as a good fertilizer. It is also used to shelter plants for the winter. Cups are filled with sphagnum, in which they then sow or plant plants.
In floriculture, white moss is used due to:
- Bactericidal properties. It is used to treat various plant diseases.
- Hygroscopicity. Moss helps keep the soil moist. It is also used to prepare various substrates.
Sphagnum is indispensable for caring for phalaenopsis... It is scalded with boiling water, wrung out. Then they are sprayed with mineral fertilizers, which are pre-mixed in water. After that, the excess moisture is separated and transferred to a plastic bag. They are kept in this state for 4 days.
An orchid is planted in such a prepared substrate, the roots of which have not reached 7 cm. When the desired size is reached, the flower is transplanted into a special soil.
How to collect and store moss properly
Collect only white moss that grows in swamps. It is not recommended to pluck the plants from the bottom cushion, since a large amount of sphagnum can be destroyed in this way. It is safest to cut off the top green portion with a sharp knife.
The harvested raw materials should be sorted out, removing all insect larvae. Then thoroughly pour over boiling water and spread on a paper or linen towel. It is recommended to dry sphagnum in the shade with minimal moisture indicators.
It is not recommended to dry the moss in an electric dryer, as it will not be possible to obtain high-quality raw materials.
Finished raw materials should be kept only in bags made from natural materials. The storage area should be dry and dark. An excellent option is the pantry, the upper shelf of the kitchen cabinet.
Sphagnum moss is a unique plant. When used correctly, it can cure many diseases. The main thing is to follow simple recommendations, then it will not be difficult to achieve the desired result.
