We plant actinidia in spring: when, where and how
A woody vine with delicious fruits has recently become more and more popular among gardeners, and this is well deserved. Actinidia will not only delight you with a delicious and very useful harvest, but also decorate the site with its decorative variegated foliage and charming flowering. In a private garden, lianas are most often planted in the spring with the help of a seedling purchased from a nursery. What you should pay attention to and how to plant anemones in the spring - we'll talk about this today.
When to plant?
Spring advantage planting actinidia lies in the fact that before the first frosts, the seedling manages to form a sufficiently powerful root system, grow well and get stronger, and in this form the winter frosts are not terrible for the plant. In addition, when planting a seedling with its own roots in the ground, with the beginning of active sap flow, one can expect from actinidia the simultaneous development of both deciduous mass and flower buds, which has a positive effect on yield.
The planting time for vines depends on the specific region, but general recommendations are to comply with the following conditions:
- the snow should completely melt;
- soil - warm up;
- air temperature - to reach stable values without the threat of return frosts (about 10 degrees during the day, at least 5 degrees at night).
The planting of the seedling must be carried out before the fruit buds open on it. In an emergency, late spring planting after flowering is allowed, but this is more the exception than the rule.
How to choose a seedling?
When buying ornamental varieties of actinidia, only one requirement applies to them - the seedling must be well developed and healthy. If it is planned to grow shrubs for the sake of fruits, then in this case, heterosexual seedlings should be purchased, while it is better that female bushes predominate (one boy for a dozen girls).
You need to buy only seedlings aged 2 to 4 years. Younger plants have not yet grown good roots and do not take root well, and the "overripe" ones often get sick.
Where to plant?
The best place on the site for actinidia will be a free area in light partial shade, located on a hill. It is very good if there is a fence or wall next to it that will cover the bush from the wind and serve as a support for it, and in the absence of such, you need to take care of creating an arch.
You can not plant actinidia in deep shade near tall trees, moreover, the liana can over time completely braid them.
How to plant?
Plant actinidia in two ways:
- single bushes;
- trench rows.
The planting pit should be deep enough, 50 * 50 cm, to accommodate fertilizers (compost and a little superphosphate). When planting in rows between the holes, leave a distance of at least 1 m, and the row spacing - up to 4 m altogether, since actinidia grows well.
It is necessary to plant a bush using the transshipment method, after which it is abundantly watered and mulched.A small mesh fence will also not hurt - it will protect actinidia from cat paws and teeth, since these pets are not averse to feasting on delicate stems and leaves.
