So beautiful and so different amaryllis
Among the bulbous indoor plants, amaryllis occupies a special place in the hearts of flower growers. This beautiful plant with proud, tall and powerful peduncles becomes the main decoration of the house during the blooming of inflorescences on them. Its flowers are even used to make bouquets. Presenting amaryllis means confessing your sympathy, and thanks to the wide variety of flower species, you can choose a plant for every taste.
What is amaryllis?
Feature amaryllis (photo) is that as a result of distillation, the peduncle emerges first from the bulb. Leaves begin to form either in the middle or after the end of flowering and grow until the onset of a dormant period. They are rather long and narrow, painted in a solid green color. After flowering ends, babies appear near the bulb, with which it is easy to propagate the flower.
The color of amaryllis inflorescences can be very diverse, there are even varieties with green flowers. Up to 6 flowers can be on one peduncle, but not less than 3, although this is rare. The bulb can give up to two peduncles, sometimes even three, which is not very good for it (it is quickly depleted and after such a rapid flowering next year, most likely, it will not bloom). However, one important detail unites all varieties of amaryllis - their inflorescences are very, very large.
Amaryllis recognized as one of the best indoor plants for forcing. Its flowering time is easy to manage by adjusting it to the desired date.
Popular varieties
The parent of all currently existing hybrid varieties of a flower is amaryllis Belladonna. On its basis, varieties were bred with uncharacteristic color of inflorescences, as well as having several tones. In addition, breeders managed to obtain species with double inflorescences and narrower petals.
Among the most original and well-known amaryllis hybrids, the following varieties can be distinguished:
- With simple inflorescences - Black Pearl, Exotic, Lemon Lime, Rosalie.
- With double inflorescences - Double Dragon, Merry Crismes, Macarena.
- With inflorescences painted in several colors - Estella, Neon, Misty.
- With narrow leaves - Lima, Santana, Chico.
How to get new varieties at home?
Ordinary growers can also feel like a breeder and get a variety with an unusual color. This is not at all difficult to do: during flowering, you need to collect pollen from the stamens of one variety with a brush and transfer it to another species. Thus, after the end of flowering, a new hybrid of amaryllis can be grown from the seeds formed, which will combine the color of the parent varieties.
