Choosing bright beautiful plants for the autumn garden
In this article, we will share the experience of foreign gardeners and talk about how to make your garden dazzle with the brightest autumn colors. Many gardeners prefer autumn to all other seasons. By this time, the summer heat and humidity are gone, the pesky insects are gone, and the leaves of many plants paint the landscape with bold touches of red, yellow, orange and purple.
Where to begin?
To select plants for planting, visit your local nursery with a pen, paper and a camera. Take notes, take pictures and ask key questions:
- whether the plant has colorful berries in winter;
- whether it will attract birds;
- what it looks like in the rest of the year.
So you can choose the best option specifically for your site.
Trees for the autumn garden
Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) and sugar maple (Acer saccharum) come to mind at the thought of vibrant foliage, with their blended palettes of luscious glowing hues.
If you don't have room for these large trees that can grow to over 18 meters, there are many smaller ones that are every bit as beautiful. Irga Osenniy Brilliant (variety Amelanchier x grandiflora) reaches only 6 m and is distinguished by bright red autumn foliage. In early spring, white flowers bloom on it, and later on, sweet, edible berries appear.
Derain kousa (Cornus kousa) grows up to 8 m and wears a reddish-purple autumn dress. The four-meter Japanese maple Sherwood Flame (Acer palmatum cultivar) is a true picture of scarlet flowers.
Shrubs for the autumn garden
Shrubs are the basis for the exhibition, as they fill the lower tier and are dazzled with a variety of colors. Red sumac (Rhus coriaria) is a great option.
Tall blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) also looks very attractive, its crown rises to a height of 4m. In addition to its hardy, bright red autumn leaves, you will enjoy its pink-tinted white spring flowers and amazing tasty juicy berries.
Aronia has bright orange-red autumn foliage. That being said, it also looks attractive in spring with its white flowers, and in summer it bears red fruits.
Ginkgo is a graceful ancient variety that turns golden yellow in autumn.
Witch hazel is the perfect fall shrub. During this period, it sparkles with yellowness thanks to its lush foliage and spiderweb-like flowers.
The colorful autumn palette is not limited to trees and shrubs. Many vines and ground cover varieties, perennials and ornamental grasses all contribute to the variety of unique textures and tones in your garden area. Creating a unique autumn garden is not difficult at all. Just take the time to prepare and plan, and let your imagination run wild.
