Growing potatoes from seeds is a guarantee of obtaining high-quality planting material

Seedling potatoes from seeds Growing potatoes in the cramped conditions of a summer cottage does not allow for a full-fledged crop rotation, especially for potato plantations. Accumulate illness in the ground, transmitted through tubers. If there is no exchange of planting material, then six tubers per bush are considered an excellent yield.

Ways to increase the yield of potatoes

Growing potatoes from seeds

Every gardener is puzzled by the question of how to grow a good harvest of potatoes. Everyone wants to reduce the area of garden crops at the expense of yield. In order to grow a productive potato garden you need:

  • follow crop rotation;
  • fulfill agrotechnical requirements;
  • regularly replace the planting material.

With this approach, a ton of potatoes per hundred square meters will become a reality. The property of potato tubers to gradually accumulate diseases, lose taste and yield over the years is known to everyone.
How to grow a good harvest of potatoes guaranteed? You can upgrade your seeds by purchasing elite material from seed farms and breeding stations. It is expensive, and some of the resulting nodules still have to be propagated. As a result, in three to four years the harvest will drop again.

After a few years, any potato degenerates and requires a new replacement. The best way is to obtain healthy planting material from seeds.

Seed potatoes

Collection of seeds for subsequent plantingGrowing potatoes from seeds can be a fun and rewarding experience. Berries on bushes contain seeds, but do not carry hereditary diseases. That is, getting a potato bush from a seed, we get a super-elite planting material. Only seeds are smaller than the head of a pin and do not inspire confidence in the result.

You can buy seeds in a specialized store, or you can get them yourself from your plantation by collecting large balabolki from the bushes in the fall. Then they need to be held until a sluggish state on the window and the seeds must be selected in a container, rinsed, dried and put in a dry, dark place until the end of March. Both those and other seeds in the berry have splitting properties. Healthy bushes will grow from seeds, but not all will repeat the properties of the mother plant.

How to grow seedlings?

Sowing potato seedsThere are several points that the gardener needs to consider:

  • seed germination is maintained for 2 years;
  • seedlings do not tolerate a pick;
  • the soil must be free of pathogens.

Pre-planting seed preparation consists in treatment with potassium permanganate, followed by washing and drying of small seeds. The soil should be a loose nutrient mixture, necessarily sifted. Several cups with drainage holes are installed in the pallet. The soil is poured into two-thirds of a 100 ml cup and several seeds are spread over the surface. It is necessary to lightly sprinkle the surface with sand, spray from a spray bottle to seal. Cover the cups. Seedlings will appear in 2 - 3 weeks.

It is impossible to water the seedlings with soaking the leaf.

Seed shoots from potatoesRight watering potatoes at this stage across the pan, as for begonias. The earth itself will pull moisture. Of the several seedlings that have appeared, you need to leave one of the strongest, cut off the rest with nail scissors. A very weak root system of seedlings is poorly restored. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid stages of injury when diving.Seeds are stored in abundance, and up to two dozen bushes are grown. For a personal household, it is no longer required.

Subsequently, transshipment into more capacious containers will be required. Thus, the seedlings grow to stable heat without recurrent frost. The term of seedling cultivation is 60 days plus 2 weeks for seedlings. This means that the seed must be lowered into the ground two and a half months before the steady heat in the region. How to care for seedling potatoes?

Seed Potato Care

Potato bedsSeedlings planted in loose, fertile soil will develop quickly. Please note that the bushes will differ in appearance. The goal of the gardener will be to wait for the harvest and take seeds from the most successful specimens, to the last smallest tuber. Proper watering of potatoes is not about wetting the leaf plate from above, but watering along high furrows. After raking the potatoes, water is launched into the furrows, and conditions are created for soaking the entire stroke. You need 2 such watering over the summer.

Waterlogging is harmful to potatoes. If the ground is wet at a depth of 10 cm, everything is in order.

Potatoes get moisture from the air through the pubescent leaf blade. After a while, the plantation grown from seedlings will stand out for its healthy appearance. It is important to keep weeds clean. Every gardener knows how to weed potatoes. Here you just need to carefully examine each bush. A weed like quinoa is the place where late blight begins to develop. And for an elite potato, her presence nearby is absolutely useless.

It is not a bad idea to spray the plantation with EM-1 Baikal during the summer season. This preparation creates conditions for better development and filling of the root crop. Microorganisms have a beneficial effect on plant development and soil health.

Harvest

New planting materialIf you care for your potatoes like your favorite plant, the results will be surprising. Each bush will yield up to twenty tubers of different sizes. You need to select the entire crop from the bush you like. Don't throw away even the smallest potatoes. To get a full-fledged bush from it, you just need to save the tuber.

A nodule with a marigold will be a full-fledged bush for next year.

Rinse all the selected material and hold it in diffused light, cool to light green. Perhaps next year, a new variety will be derived from the new material. Fixing its properties is already the next task.

How often are potato seeds changed?

The planting material obtained from seeds for the second year is called by agronomists the super-elite of the first reproduction. From it, the next year, cultivated varietal potatoes will become super elite. The next reproduction yields ware potatoes and elite seed material. After three years, the yield begins to fall and you need to look for fresh potatoes for breeding again. It is easier to grow several bushes from seeds every year, and gradually prepare fresh planting material.

    I also tried to get healthy seed from potato seeds once. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the "bulbs" formed after the flowering of the culture fall off very quickly and are lost somewhere. Therefore, I tied them with bags from a regular vegetable net. And when the potato bushes were completely dry, it was not difficult to walk around the site and collect the ripened "fruits" of the potato. The seeds were easily separated from the peel. The number in each bulb was about the same as in one small package, which are sold in all seed stores.
    So, if anyone has a desire to get their own renewed seed, feel free to experiment! By the way, it should be noted that not all potato varieties produce similar fruits.

    It will probably be right to buy potato seeds from trusted producers ...

      There are no “proven producers”, but it is a pleasure to increase the yield of your own potatoes!

    Hello! I have this question. I sowed the collected potato seeds very early, in February. About a month later, I spread the seedlings into liter containers. The potatoes were growing on a backlit windowsill. Big, powerful bushes have grown. It is too early to plant on the garden bed. The stems have already begun to dry out. I decided that nothing happened, I pulled out the stems, and there were many small nodules in the ground. Question. What to do next, plant these nodules in the soil now or leave them for planting next year so that they "mature"? We live in Siberia, we will plant potatoes in a week.

      This is a first year crop and should be tried to be preserved until next season. Tubers must be ripe before subsequent planting.
