The Mantet apple tree is the most fragrant summer variety for your garden
She will not surprise you either by the large dimensions of the tree itself, or by the size of the fruits, or even by high winter hardiness. But, despite this, the Mantet apple tree is one of the most popular varieties among gardeners. And all thanks to the excellent taste and yield. Every year this apple tree will produce very sweet, juicy and aromatic fruits with an original striped speckled color.
Apple Mantet - plant description
The variety was obtained by Canadian breeders by free pollination of the Grushovka Moskovskaya apple tree. Designed for growing in warm regions, maximum in the central zone. For the north, the apple tree is too weak due to its low winter hardiness.
Productivity and taste characteristics
Mantet is a mid-summer variety, and the beginning of fruiting also depends on the type of rootstock. Low-growing trees will give the first harvest in the second or third year of life, but they live a maximum of 30 years. From a vigorous rootstock, you need to wait for fruits no earlier than after 4 years, but the life of the trees increases 2 times. The highest yield is found in young trees; with age, it becomes unstable.
The variety is self-fertile and requires pollinators. They can be Orlinka apple trees, White filling, Grushovka Moscow, Papirovka or Melba.
Apples begin to ripen at the end of July, and not simultaneously, so the harvest is carried out in several stages. Fruits are medium in size, weighing about 100 g each, slightly oval in shape, with a smooth and thin greenish-yellow skin. But a blurred red blush spreads completely throughout the apple in stripes, on which light blotches appear. The pulp is very aromatic, dense and juicy, creamy in color, with a slight acidity. But if you wait until it is fully ripe, then it becomes loose. The variety is intended for fresh consumption and processing. Apples cannot be stored for more than 2 weeks.
Pros and cons of the variety
Of the advantages of the Mantet apple tree, it is worth noting early maturity, yield and excellent fruit taste. The variety also has disadvantages:
- frequency and decrease in fruiting in mature trees;
- short storage times and difficulties with transportation due to the fact that the thin skin is easily damaged;
- the need to plant pollinators;
- the average level of winter hardiness (flower buds especially suffer from recurrent frosts).
